Ukrainian soldiers storm Russian positions in Bakhmut

The head of the Wagner Group has said that the Ukrainian counteroffensive was already underway in Bakhmut, and accused President Volodymyr Zelensky of being “deceptive” by telling journalists that the counteroffensive had not yet begun.

"As for the counter-offensive, Volodymyr Zelensky is not being exactly truthful: the counter-offensive is in full swing," Yevgeny Prigozhin said in a statement.

Mr Zelensky had told European broadcasters that Ukraine needed more time to launch the highly-anticipated counter-offensive, as the military still needs the Western aid which has been promised.

Mr Prigozhin said, who runs Russia's largest private army, said that Ukrainian units were approaching from the flanks,"and they're successful".

It was not possible to immediately verify the claims of a counter offensive.
